Hot Chocolate for One

When it’s cold outside what’s better than snuggling up under a blanket with a large steaming mug of hot chocolate! Thanks to winter storm Jonas I was snowed in this weekend and had plenty of time to enjoy hot chocolate and work on new recipes for the blog.

I love chocolate. I love chocolate candy, cookies, brownies, cake, mochas…I think you get the picture here. When it’s snowing or any cold winter night, I love a nice mug of hot chocolate! I’m always on the lookout for a great recipe that I can whip up in a couple minutes when the craving strikes. This recipe is just what I was looking for, it has 3 main ingredients and is extremely customizable, think adding a sprinkling of cinnamon or dash of vanilla.

Let’s talk about cocoa powder for a minute. Last year I discovered Hershey’s Special Dark cocoa powder and it is life changing. It has a deeper flavor and darker color than traditional cocoa powder and makes this dark chocolate loving girl very happy!

Hot Chocolate for One

To make the hot chocolate incredibly smooth you can sift the sugar and cocoa together. I’ve made this recipe using all dark cocoa and using only half dark and it is delicious both ways.

Ingredients:

1 1/4 cup milk (I use 1%)
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (see note above)
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
Optional: 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon mixed in with the cocoa powder or 1/4 teaspoon vanilla mixed in once it is hot.

Directions:
  1. In a small sauce pan whisk the cocoa and sugar.
  2. On medium heat add 1/4 cup milk and whisk until combined.
  3. Add the remaining milk and whisk for 4-5 minutes or until the mixture is hot.
  4. Pour into a mug, top with whipped cream and enjoy!
