Let’s start with the crust since it’s the basis for this recipe. I recommend using your favorite homemade crust. I’m still on the lookout for a no-fail pie crust recipe, do you have a favorite  recipe you want to share? Leave a link in the comments below or send me an email to: email  I know that homemade pie crust can be intimidating, but just remember use cold, cold butter or better yet, follow the directions for the recipe you are using. If homemade pie crust isn’t your thing, they sell some refrigerated ones that are pretty good.

Now for the filling, I like to use brown sugar in this recipe since it gives the filling a nice caramely flavor. Now you can substitute with normal sugar if you don’t like caramely flavor, but I don’t know if we can still be friends. The cinnamon gives it just a hint of warmth while the salt enhances the flavor of the apples and keeps it from being too rich. I love the ratio of sweet caramely apple filling to flaky, buttery crust.

Flat Apple Pie

I didn’t include a pie crust recipe in this post, so use whatever your favorite one is.

Ingredients:

2-3 medium apples, peeled and sliced
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon flour
1 tablespoon butter
1 Pie Crust

Directions:
  1. Preheat oven to 375.
  2. In large bowl, stir together the apples, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt.
  3. Roll out pie crust and place on a large rimmed baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a spilpat liner. Place the apple mixture in the middle of the crust and fold over the edges of the crust so that it covers 1 to 2 inches of the apple mixture. Top with pieces of the butter.
  4. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, until the filling is golden and the apples are soft. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
